The World’s Emissions Problem is Tasmania’s Opportunity

Tasmania can lean into this opportunity by decarbonising its own transport sector and unlocking significant cost savings for consumers. Electric vehicles typically save their owners between $1,500 and $4,000 a year on fuel and repairs.

There are significant opportunities for Tasmania in low emissions supply chains. Some examples include disruptive models of electric vehicle ownership and charging, and the development and deployment of new and innovative technologies.

Some Examples include CZI’s Clean Energy Champions, startups like Countrywide Hydrogen and established businesses like INCAT.

There is a role for existing industry and government in fostering these opportunities, with some examples included below:

  • Grants and no interest loans to businesses to develop innovative low and zero emissions transport supply chains and software

  • Grants and no interest loans to businesses to upskill workers to build, maintain and sell zero emission transport solutions, including charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure.

  • Continuing the discounts and exemptions on state government duties and charges when purchasing BEVs and hydrogen vehicles

  • Rebating state government duties and charges associated with installing new charging or refueling infrastructure

  • New incentives for commercial operators seeking to connect new charging or refueling infrastructure

  • Introduction of a means tested subsidy for household and businesses to buy EVs, electric bikes, and other transport decarbonisation enablers.

  • Grants and no interest loans to promote new and existing incentives, such as novated leasing, fringe benefit tax exemption, etc.
